Ian’s Career
Ian began his career in 2001 as a solicitor for the large Auckland firm Rudd, Watts & Stone (now Minter Ellison).
In 2003, he joined the office of the Crown Solicitor in Auckland – Meredith Connell. While a Crown prosecutor, Ian prosecuted a large number and wide array of cases on behalf of the Crown, the Police and other Government entities in both the District and High Courts.
In 2013, Ian joined the independent bar and helped establish Sentinel Chambers in Auckland city. As a barrister, Ian acts for defendants in the District Court, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. No case is too big or too small and Ian has the abilities and the connections to achieve good results in any Court forum.
Sentinel Chambers
Ian helped establish Sentinel Chambers in Central Auckland. Sentinel Chambers brings together nine lawyers and a wealth of litigation experience. The barristers at Sentinel call on that collective pool of experience to support each other and thereby achieve the best results for clients. Though they work alongside each other, the independence of each barrister at Sentinel Chambers is jealously guarded.
Regulatory Work
Ian is also a specialist in regulatory prosecution cases, and is able to help, no matter how simple or complex the case may be.
During his career, Ian has acted as counsel in a wide range of regulatory prosecution cases. These include cases brought by the Commerce Commission, WorkSafe NZ, The Companies Office Enforcement Unit, ACC, Medsafe, the Commissioner of Police and local Councils.
For example, Ian has worked on cases involving:
Fair trading,
Price fixing,
The Medicines Act,
Health and safety – including cases involving fatalities,
Fraud cases involving beneficiaries or bankrupts, and
Civil forfeiture proceedings.
In April 2018, Ian prosecuted the first trial under the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2016. He is also currently involved in two large fair trading prosecutions that are to be heard in 2019.
Ian’s experience means he can act either as a prosecutor or for the defence. Ian's experience in acting for both sides in regulatory cases gives him the edge over other lawyers who specialise in acting for just one side. These qualities mean that Ian is well placed to give realistic strategic advice and achieve good results for his clients.
